MoMA Studio: Exchange Cafe OPENS THIS FRIDAY!! This 5-week interactive space is open Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1-5pm with evening hours on Fridays, from 1-8pm. You can come hang out during any open Studio hours for FREE- you don’t even need an admission ticket. Just enter through our Research and Education building at 4 West 54th Street and walk straight down!

During the Studio, there will be a range of experiences and programs you can attend to learn about our collaborators, artistic practice, and exchange. Check out our full schedule of programs here.

What can you expect when you come by?

Exchange Cafe - make currency and exchange it for some tea, milk, and honey

The question is how we react to this great prejudice against women. The rule of law and social activism certainly are crucial. But no matter how strong the social structure, there is always that cheek-slapped moment when you are alone with the anti-woman prejudice: the joke, the leer, the disregard, the invisibility, the inescapable fact that the moment you walk through the door you are seen as lesser, no matter what your credentials.

I have no guidance for women who want to rise through the ranks into technical management. I have led a peripatetic life, moving on when a project was done or the next thing intrigued me.

And I am not advising younger women (or any woman) to tough it out. You can lash back, which I have done too often and which has rarely served me well. You can quit and look for other jobs, which is sometimes a very good idea.

But the prejudice will follow you. What will save you is tacking into the love of the work, into the desire that brought you there in the first place. This creates a suspension of time, opens a spacious room of your own in which you can walk around and consider your response. Staring prejudice in the face imposes a cruel discipline: to structure your anger, to achieve a certain dignity, an angry dignity.

Every language has its own version of um. French has euh, Korean eum, Finnish öö, Russian eh; even sign languages have signs for um. The fact that most languages have some kind of um suggests that it serves a natural and important language function.

So what is this important language function? Why do people say um? Not because they are nervous. Scholarly studies of the word reveal that the use of um does not correlate with anxiousness or any particular personality traits. Rather, um is used to signal an upcoming pause—usually uh for a short pause and um for a longer pause. The pause may be needed in order to find the right word, remember something temporarily forgotten, or repair a mistake. Um holds the floor for us while we do our mental work. It buys some time for thinking.

According to a recent study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, kids who frequently eat meals with their families report having better relationships with their parents and are at a lower risk for abusing drugs.

…While he’s happy for Family Meal to spur debate on food economics and environmental sustainability, Adesko says grand social commentary is not his primary intent. I think Black people are not afforded the luxury of existing without being pigeonholed into an aggressive state of being. Many times Black people are displayed as hyper-aggressive and because of this display we create a mentality that were stuck with hyper-aggressiveness.

That isn’t to say that being strong, tough, or aggressive are bad things, they come with our survival. But the vulnerability pain, and gentleness that Black people reveal are not present many times in the media or even in our homes. The luxury of intimacy with other people is so small in comparison to the thousands of images of us being strong and “animalistic” (by intimacy I mean without guards, barriers, being invested with other people without a facade to what you are or layers you create.)

Similar to the phrase ”carefree black girls and boys”, I wanted to give a safe space to vulnerablity of Blackness to be on display
